It all started with a man named William Ziegelbein (1828-1886) (or maybe it was Ziegenbein) and his wife Sophia Niermann (1835-1912) who came to America from Lippe, Germany sometime before 1857. William and Sophia were married June 5, 1857 in New York City. From about 1858 to 1866 they had 6 children, only three of whom lived past their first year. From the surviving two sons, Henry and Carl, come all the Ziegelbeins in the United States today and, of course, many other descendants with a variety of surnames. From their daughter Marie who married Louis Ehlers came the Ehlers descendants. Sometime between 1864 and 1877, William and family moved to Concordia, Missouri. Carl stayed in the area and Henry ended up in Polk County, Nebraska. Even today, with a quick search on the Internet, we find 15 Ziegelbeins living in Missouri and 7 in Nebraska. In fact, Chris, Wilmer and Vernon Ziegelbein live in Concordia, MO and Kenneth Ziegelbein lives in Polk, NE. Of course, there are a couple of hundred other descendants of William (the search is underway), but it's easier to hunt for the original ancestor's name. That's a nice thing about a name like Ziegelbein (just like von Fange), if you find one, you know they're family!

3-25-10 Shirley Ziegelbein
Schmidt informs us that her mother, Elna (Bredehoft) Ziegelbein, will be
celebrating her 100th birthday with a planned celebration on
Sunday, April 10, 2010, 3:00-5:00 p.m. at her church, St. John’s Lutheran on
Highway H in Monett, MO. Her actual birthday is Easter Sunday, April 4, but we,
in light of the “busyness” of that weekend, have chosen to delay the celebration
to the following Saturday. I have sent invitations to a few Ziegelbein addresses
I have, but I’m sure there are others who would be interested whose addresses I
do not have. We have requested no gifts, but if someone would like to send a
card, please address it to:

Yesterday, I received word by phone that Kenneth and Shirley Ziegelbein of the
Nebraska branch will come, driven by their daughter, Karen, who lives in Iowa.
Because they need to drive back on Saturday in order to attend a family
confirmation on Sunday in Nebraska, they are interested in getting together with
any other relatives hopefully earlier in the day. You can contact Shirley at
vajohnnies (at sign) gmail.com until April 1st.
8-19-04 Ruth Haesemeier, descendant of Louis Ehlers and Marie Ziegelbein, makes contact via email!
12-18-03 John Fischer sent an updated email address and picture of his family - thanks John!
5-31-03 Jim Ziegelbein has scanned a number of family pictures - take a look here and thanks Jim!
5-9-03 Terri Ziegelbein Davis found our website and emailed me. She is the daughter of Douglas Edgar and Shirley Ziegelbein. He, in turn, is the son of Edgar and Marie Ziegelbein. They were from Nebraska but moved to Illinois (very interesting! - see Questions We Can't Answer # 4) before later moves. I've added Terri and her parents' email addresses, so feel free to say hello and welcome them to the greater Ziegelbein family gathering here on the Internet.
9-26-02 David Niermann stopped by 3M's world headquarters in St. Paul, MN today and joined cousin Paul von Fange for lunch and catching up on family history. One new idea coming out of the get-together: how do we create mp3 clips from old home movies of our families and put them on the web site for all to see?
